This document describes the differences between Fixture Module compatibility with Cassini 16, Large/Small Cassini and RI7100A. It is particularly useful for looking up how to replace the functionality of a fixture module with limited availability or when upgrading to Cassini 16. For Cassini 16, some Fixture Module functionality has been replaced by functionality provided by a TIM. Compared with Fixture Modules, TIMs provide increased performance and, unlike a fixture module, one instrument can be used between multiple Fixtures. This document is updated as needed, subject to change without notice.

There are now 3 generations of Fixture Carrier and Module: RIFL, Active and Passive. The Carrier PCB is installed in the Fixture and connects the Modules to the Cassini EPC through RIFL. RILF Fixture Modules require a RIFL carrier are controlled directly by the RIFL bus and function as any other Instrument in a testplan and must be configured in the Fixture Def with the Device Connection Editor, no manual coding required and resources operate at full RIFL speed. Active Fixture Modules require an Active carrier and appear as instruments in the testplan, but can only operate as fast as the RIFL to C-bit conversion built into the carrier board (about 10x slower than RIFL) and may require 5v control logic not available on RIFL carriers. Active Fixture Modules that are also compatible with RIFL 3.3v control are listed as "Active/RIFL" below. Passive Fixture Modules must be manually controlled in the testplan with C-bits and can be used on any type of carrier. Fixture Modules listed as "N/A" are completely passive and do not require power or control to operate and can be mounted anywhere within the Fixture.
C-Bits are supplied directly from the Testhead ONLY when a RIFL or Active Carrier is not present. When RIFL/Active carriers are connected, the C-Bits are provided by the carrier directly and must be physically connected.
The carrier is dependant on the Infrastructure (Cassini 16 vs Large/Small Cassini vs RI7100A) and the version of the Sides and Top Plate. New designs should use the Pod Carrier (RIK0303A) while RIFL Carriers will be available for pre-existing designs.
Fixture Carrier Support by System Model:
Cassini 16 - Pod Carrier (RIK0303A), RIFL Carrier, RIK0200A 13 Module for Matrix Top Plate (RIK0163), or RIK0157A+RIK0236A 1x5 Carriers for custom top plates/soft dock
RI7100A - Passive & Active Carriers (limited availability): 12RF RIK0014B, RIK0084A 20RF, or RIK0160A LG/SM Cassini Only (not Cassini 16)
RI8556A/RI8557A Small/Large Cassini (RI7100C) - Active Carrier (limited availability), RIK0160A
NOTE: Active carriers and their modules are "limited availability" and should not be considered in new designs, use of Cassini 16 and RIFL carriers is strongly recommended.
Carrier Support by Interface Types:
Pod - Pod Carrier (RIK0303A) is fast as RIFL, but requires "pod" boards that can hold up to two Fixture Modules or may be it's own PCB.
RIFL - RIK0200A Cassini 16, RIK0175A 1x5 (RIK0236A Expansion 1x5), 3.3v on control lines vs 5v (so not compatible with some "Active" Modules.
Active - RI7100A 12RF RIK0014B, RIK0084A RI7100A 20RF, RIK0160A LG/SM Cassini Only (not Cassini 16)
Passive - Not Available (see RIFL), powered by module slot, "manual" control with c-bits
N/A - attach with double sided tape, "manual" control with c-bits
Any - Module can function in both Active or Passive (with c-bits) modes, RIFL carrier uses passive (c-bit) control
NOTE: RIFL is only supported on Cassini 16, LG/SM Cassini only supports Active
