Multiple causes for measurement failures are very common in RF system debugging. This is compounded by the high precision and accuracy the RI 7100A strives to maintain at all times.

In the following example the switch G diagnostic fails (see section 12 for diagrams) and all other diagnostics pass.

We know that the receiver subsystem is functioning properly and it has a valid calibration since all the hardware (Diagnose Test Plans) and calibration (Verify Test Plans) are passing. This provides us with a high degree of confidence in the results of the switch G diagnostic test.

Switch G is utilized to switch the direct paths of the RF2, 3, 6, & 7 test ports to the receiver. It connects the test ports to the receiver though switch I , H and the step attenuator. The problem could be with any of the components along that path as well as other factors such as: a loose SMA connector on any of the components, a bad cable/connector combination, operator misinterpretation of the prompted instructions while running the diagnostic, or bad calibration components.

The lesson here is that ANYTHING in the RF path could be the cause of the problem. Look for the obvious things first like tightening all the SMA connectors, or tapping on the system while running the diagnostics to see if any loose connections exist.

If more than one diagnostic test fails, log all the failing results and please contact RI for help in identifying the appropriate action.

Note: After replacing any part, run all the diagnostics again to determine that the hardware is functioning properly BEFORE attempting to calibrate any part of the system.

Note: After replacing a part, running the Verify diagnostics may cause a failure since the calibration data may no longer be valid. Run these Verify diagnostics plans again after recalibrating the required paths. Contact RI for determination of what paths need to be calibrated after the repair.
